Sibu’s Sweet Revenge... Or BL’s Glorious Achievement...?
After two years of defeat and another two years of practice and planning of the downfall of their rivals, the choir of SMK Sibu Methodist finally tasted their long-awaited sweet revenge over the only other choir with any chance of blocking their path which is the SMK Batu Lintang choir, posting a victory as the 2007 Sarawak champions for a place in the finals, where each state will fight it out for the top honours in Terengganu.
Some may say we were not good enough, Sibu Methodist were too good, or we were overconfident – but we know that we really kicked some choir butts with some guidance from our incredible teacher, Pn. Luk, mostly led by our peer, Ryner Lai who put to use all his experience and knowledge to bring out the best in us, so we should be as proud as anything that we made it so far!
Of course, we were hoping to make history by bringing down one of the strongest secondary school choir in Malaysia, not to mention one with full-time choir instructors as well as RM60-an-hour-per-member vocal training (or so we heard). Luck seemed to be on our side as we were drawn to be the first to perform in the icy air of the Wisma Auditorium, Bintulu, making it likely that the cold air would affect the other team’s voices, but alas, it was not to be. After many, many months of hard work and sacrifices, we managed to clinch second place, followed by Chung Hua Miri taking third place.
I daresay we lost to a team better than us for that day, although I trust, had we performed our best like we did in the evening practice on the eve of the competition, it would be hard to decide the winner.
Beware – the Rock of Horizon will be back – with a new zeal, and hopefully, Pn. Luk – thereby dubbed: the (re-)Rise of Batu Lintang!!

After the competition...
Hey everyone,
Well, I guess by this time most of you would probably know we got a decent 2nd place in the state level competition, with Sibu in 1st place and Miri in 3rd place.. Well, we did our best and we put up a good fight. I honestly felt we lost to a better team.
Through this competition, I'm sure we have learned a lot... We have learned what it means by competition now and the attitude and mindset required, and also the standard we need to achieve to make it to nationals. To the ex-members who might be wondering, the choir of SMK Methodist is at their best right now, and are far better than the standard I got to see them in the year 2004.. They are really tough competition now and they remind me in a lot of ways of us back then..
The SMK Methodist members were really humble and friendly... They were so disciplined and sounded so good but yet they were not proud in any way.. The teachers even greeted me and I just wished they stayed longer in the hotel so that somehow we could all get together and have a nice friendly chat over some roti canai or something... Haha... I can really see that the SMK Methodist team were in it to win it.. Very disicplined and I think they managed to give SMK Methodist an excellent image.. I honestly love everything about their choir this time..
Each phrase, each line is very well taken care of... The SMK Methodist team has obviously worked hard and must have endure a lot of no-nonsense practices.. I felt even in terms of discipline, they already deserved to win. It's not like we're not disciplined, it's just that we're not disciplined enough... I could feel a lot of the members didn't really have to spirit to win, they felt they could win hands down.. So after chatting with a few seniors, I concluded that our biggest setback was the members' attitude. If they had better attitudes, we would have undoubtedly been much better than we are now. During practices when I am talking some of them are also talking.. and some do not take comments and corrections in good spirit.. The condition really is not THAT bad, but it isn't that great either.. We will not tolerate anything more like that next year.
Participating in the competition at least gives us an idea of how things should go and I am sure we have learned a lot through this whole experience.. I, for one, have learnt a a whole lot from being the conductor of a choir without a proper vocal coach this year.. As you can imagine, being thrown into circumstances that no normal Form 4 guy would be thrown into, and having to be tough through all the bad times and the good times... Well, you really learn a lot through going through all that...
To the present choir members, I'm sure we all have learned a lot and are better ready for any future competitions. For those who are leaving, well, it does not necessarily spell the end of choir for you all.. You can still drop by and maybe even follow us on some choir trips, and we may still have a few choir activities coming up.. And for everyone, don't keep thinking about choir, although it must be an amazing journey, especially for the newer ones.. Set your mind to your studies.. Life cannot just stop at choir.. Of course you'll miss all the fun we had, but who says it's over for good? ; )
To the ex-members, I hope we did you guys proud.. The challenge set before us was not an easy one, and we did our best. I did my best, and I can honestly say that I have no regrets. There is only so much a person like can do.. If Sibu's standard was like back in 2004, we would stand a good chance in beating them, but like I said they have improved tremendously, and in a competition there are bound to be winners and loosers...
It has been a great journey, but I hope everyone will bear it mind it does not mean that it's over for good. Everyone just concentrate on your studies for the moment; for the seniors, it really is time to look to the future; for the juniors, it's all just beginning...

Go BL Choir GO!!! : )
Hey everyone,
My heart is just so excited right now... We have improved so tremendously in the final week that if someone came to listen to us two weeks ago, they probably wouldn't even recognize us now. I just listened to the July 14 performance recording and when I compared it to our singing now, the difference was simply miles apart. Our standard now can't even be compared to that of the July 14 performance!
As a new conductor in this whole choir business, obviously I'm very inexperienced although I have been involved in choral singing for a long time now. Many many thanks to Pn Luk for coming a few times in the final week to give some comments that were indescribably valuable... I've got to admit that most of the improvement in the final week before the state level choir competition came because we worked on what she said. You guys know, after the July 14 performance when I came down stage and I asked Pn Luk how it sounded, she gave a string of constructive criticism... The major things she stressed on was a brighter tone quality, not pushing too hard, the blending, the tempo...
Well, at least she did not, like others, kept telling us that we're so good. Instead, she gave us much needed criticsm and advice that helped us a lot. She even found time to come a few more times later, and that made a world of difference for us. Many many thanks to her!
And of course also to my mother and Mrs. Law who came and helped us out too... But I'll reserve all my 'thank you's only after the competition, should we win..
To the present choir members, you guys sang the BM song amazingly. And you know I rarely call anything in choral singing amazing. By shifting the whole song two semitones up and singing it a capella made it so much brighter and nicer. The middle section of the song was the sweetest thing I've heard in a long time... Leaves the July 14 performance eating its dust..
And with the English song, you guys sang it so much sweeter and nicer... So much more polished.. With the tempo right and the whole thing in tune, once again it makes the July 14 performance sound like some sick parody...
SOPRANOS: You girls have improved tremendously, many thanks to Pn Luk for that. She stressed so much on a brighter tone, and that made you girls sound so sweet that your charm can even be compared to that of St. Theresa. Just remember to hold the support until the end of the phrase, focus it and send the energy and the voice to me. I had a hard time believing in you girls, but right now you girls just wow me.
ALTOS: You girls remain quite strong, and sound pretty round and together. You girls sound quite nice, and for that we have to thank Izzati and Akasyah's efforts in helping you girls and singing.. Just be soft at the parts where you need to be soft, and watch out for your pitching too. Good job girls, keep it up!
TENORS: You guys have the most beautiful voices, honestly. Just remember to send the energy to me, and don't push too hard. Your 'ah'-ing at the middle of the BM song is just amazing. You guys can hit high notes with ease and you guys really have that sweet, gentle quality that when accompanied with a little smile would most definitely croon girls to fall in love with you...
BASS: Always the most powerful one, and also the least problematic one. You guys really have achieved singing well without sounding too harsh or pushy now. You guys compliment the others very well, just remember to lift your notes up and always be conscious of your intonation (aka your in-tuneness). I said a little while ago that you guys are about as good as the SMB Methodist guys already.. Now I can honestly say you guys sound better than them...
To the entire choir: you guys sound great! Just have more confidence, SMILE, allude more charm in your singing and we'll be alright. We all know that a SMB Methodist teacher flew all the way from Sibu to Kuching just to listen to us during the division level and that she reportedly went back relaxed... Well, she and the entire choir will be in for a great shock.. Because the standard of you guys now cannot even begin to compare with our division level standard.. I sometimes wonder, and I think that others who will hear you will wonder too, how is it possible for a choir to improve so MUCH in such little time??
Itwas always difficult for me as a conductor to believe that we can actually improve so much in such a short amount of time. But guess what guys?
You guys did it.

omg. i'm an ex-member now. ahhh!
so anyways, yeah. due to unforseen circumstances, i'm not going to bintulu, and yes. i'm not in the team anymore.. gah.
so. to all SMKBL Choir Team members
hey dudes and dudettes.. missed me? hehe. i sure do miss you guys.. despite all the tiring stuff, i miss joking arnd with you people.. ryner's weird expressions.. everyone own special thang which makes you guys sooo miss-able. how're practises going?
i heard you guys a couple of times and i must say you guys are doing greatt.. go kick some musical butss people! hehe. i've heard about the new stuff added.. looking forward to watch you guys sing and doing your own thang! weee..

One year
Exactly one year ago, on this day, we were on our way to Xiamen, China to participate in the 4th World Choir Games. Oh, how fast time flies.

4 years in the choir, I made various trips with the team. But the most, uhh..'culture-shocking' moment was when I was in Xiamen airport. I paid a visit to the ladies' room and saw this:

Dedication and Attendance..
Hey everyone,
Practices are going steady... I can see you guys pay more attention and work harder. I just want to take this opportunity to apologize if I scolded any of you choir members for some reason.. For both past and future scoldings.. But I'm sure you all know how this goes.. We can't be good if we don't have discipline..
I found out there are only two things that I've ever wanted from you guys, and that is:
1. Dedication
2. Attendance
You can probably include 'quality' as a third, but then again quality comes naturally if the two mentioned conditions are met. And you all as choir members also know that I usually get really angry and upset because of people coming late or being absent or are not working hard enough to achieve the quality needed, thus lacking in dedication.
I hope you all act up to be responsible choir members and start working hard. You know it's only two weeks left, and you all can probably understand my frustration should you guys slack and start coming late.. It's just that practices can only achieve its maximum affect if everyone comes on time, is geared towards improving, and that everyone is happy. And the best way to make it happen is up to YOU guys..
REMEMBER: dedication and attendance.
Hope all of you choir members understand the extreme importance of the following two weeks.. Work hard.. Your efforts for the school choir will be remembered.

My C.H.O.I.R Prayer
This is my prayer to the choir in SMK BL:
Dear God,
May You bless our
Conductor, Ryner Lai. Give him wisdom to teach and have PATIENT with the member.
Gives him joy, guide him in teaching the choir and lead us through the competition.
Secondly, may You give us the heart of
Humily and Harmony not only in our voices but also in our relationship between one another.
Straighten our relationship and help to bare our burden in our study.
Thirdly, may God You gives us an
Optimistic heart. Help us by taking the negative thought away before it pull us apart.
God, may You help us to
Improve in every practise, gives us a fruitful practise always. God, help us to improve the
attendance of the members by giving them wisdom to arrange time properly with the 24 hours
that You've blessed us.
Last but not least, gives us an attitude of
Respecting each of the sectional leaders, conductor and teachers. Take all their comments, no

Azrin... Goodbye My Fair Lady...

Indeed, we have grown so accustomed to our dear friend Azrin, so close and so connected with our fellow choir member. Even through her ups and downs, the choir had always been with her, and she with the choir.
But now she is gone far away "Into The West" to Penang, unwillingly of course, but some things have to happen in their own way, so we wish Azrin best of luck.
AZRIN WE LOVE YOU AND ALWAYS WILL!
Contrary to the saying, "Out of sight, out of mind", we will always think of you fondly, as "distance makes the heart grow fonder"...
May you, Azrin, go forth in love, and never forget us!! Don't stop singing and don't stop cheering (and once in a while insulting) others!!

Very disappointed..
Oxford dictionary, 'disappointed': sad or displeasure because one's hopes or expectations have not been fulfilled.
Well, we made it pass the division level round and now we're going to go to Bintulu for the state level secondary school choir competition that is coming up in around a little more than two weeks. For the seniors who have went through this same path before, I'm sure that our competitors are at their best yet. So the Batu Lintang choir army is marching on.. even without Pn Luk.
It's not an impossible task, and I believe in the potential of our school choir. Today morning we actually had a sectional practice just for the guys that started at 10.30 and ended at 12.00pm. (It started at 10.30 because we had a compulsory 'gotong-royong' for all the morning sessions before that) And when I walked in about 2 minutes after 10.30 and opened the bilik kuliah door, guess what? There was not one person present!
A few came later, but more than half of them were not present. A few were busy with the Genesis Quest thingy that also took place on this Saturday morning. And there were others.. with other reasons.
Needless to say, I am very, very disappointed.
To all the present choir members, I want to say this: wake up. Remember that we're competing against a choir that has a record about as impressive as ours in the choir competition. We're up against the best. Wake up! In the following two weeks, we can either make it or not. We have to decide whether we want to do this or not!
I'm simply wasting my time working so hard if all of you are going to keep finding thousands of excuses to keep yourselves away from practices.
Have I been too lenient to you all? Have any of you realized that we are going to face our toughest competition yet in Bintulu in about two weeks time, and that we're going to be performing on July 14 alongside some of the best choirs in Kuching?
Wake up people! You guys either give your all or not do anything at all!

The following two weeks will be crucially important. I hope you all wake up and start being a responsible choir member. I'm already doing my best and giving my all.

Well, we made it pass the division level round and now we're going to go to Bintulu for the state level secondary school choir competition that is coming up in around a little more than two weeks. For the seniors who have went through this same path before, I'm sure that our competitors are at their best yet. So the Batu Lintang choir army is marching on.. even without Pn Luk.

Happy moments together...
Today is the 1st week anniversary of our choir winning the inter-school choir competition. I felt so proud of everyone because we had done our BEST!!! But...we still have a long long way to go...that is going to participate the state level choir competition...I agreed what Ryner had said that the BIGGEST opponent in the competition is ourselves...it is true...but we must also try to work hard to be better than not only ourselves but also those who are better than us...I think we should learn from them, not always competing with ourselves. Choir had given me lots of fun and happiness. I hope this won't be the last month of our crucial bonding...especially "mommy". She had left me...and went to become a soprano...sob...Actually I dunno what decision should I make now. On the 14th July, our choir is gonna perform somewhere in Kuching but I have a very important event goin on...I think I juz needa sacrifice the it for choir...I had made so much commitment to choir, I will feel guilty if I left choir and go to the 10th (grandest) Sarawak Rainforest Festival in Damai...hmm...since choir had brought so much sweet memories, I guess I needa be with the choir that day...By the way, we had pass our division level but we must always remember to improve ourselves because you will reap for what you have sow...I believe that we can do it if we are willing to put ourselves into it!

Had to move the keyboard and wires here and there as usual. But people were... and still are obsessed with toying the tuner and all fancy sounds makable.

* We even practice at the library but i didn't took much photos of it. But it was the turning point for the choir as Ryner sort of let out whatever that clot in him (and of course the "bitchy" incident), the choir found new hope as we suddenly sounded remarkably nice.

We won!!
Yay! Competition day finally came and our school choir has managed to win the division level choir competition yet again. Phew! That means that our choir's history of always being the champion in the district level competition has not been broken.. What a relief. We're going to go to Bintulu for the state level choir competition where we'll meet up with SMK Methodist again, after so many years..
Best conductor award went to Greenroad. Third place also went to Greenroad, and the second place went to St. Theresa. First place went to.. us. Well, when the winner was announced, a lot of the members were on their feet screaming and cheering.. Guess all the months of hard work finally paid off..
I'm not going to blog much, because I don't have any pictures with me now. To the St. Theresa choir members, I've got to say you girls were much better than the last time I met your choir back in 2004.. Your choir sounded quite nice and you girls were our biggest competitors in the competition.. Congratulations!
To all the other choir members.. Yalah, happy-happy... but not for long ar! I didn't want to tell you this, but now since division level is all over now, let me just say this: we have A LOT of room for improvement and polishing, so don't get all overconfident and stuff.. Use the very short break to catch up with your studies.. I know we have fun in practices but we all know studies is still the most important thing for us as students..
Well, congratulations to all the choir members!! Seniors, I hope we made you guys proud.. The road to this outcome was not an easy one.. And we promise to do our very best to get ready for the battle ahead for us at Bintulu..

Preparations Made for the Competition
Hi everyone,
Hah.. competition coming up so soon and I really have to admit that it has really been tiring and pressuring at times. Especially the fact that people are getting SICK.. even when I told everyone plainly, "Don't get sick." A few are even so sick that they cannot even make it to practice, and that really puts unnecessary pressure on me... *pressure.. pressure...*
Not to mention that some STILL have excuses to skip practices, though only a few.. Even on Saturday when I strictly told them that whoever does not come on that day will no longer be in the team, some STILL had the bravery to go back early from practice.. For those who have been in the choir in the early years, you can probably understand my frustration at this obvious lack of commitment that leads to more pressure on my part.. *pressure.. pressure..*
The school hall was also used by PBSM for some blood donation activity from 9am to 12pm, so because of that we couldn't use it for practice. And furthermore, we are going to have four microphones on the day of the competition and I thought of using four microphones just to test how it sounds in a hall, but teacher said something about the amplifier not enough and that we could only use two microphones. For that reason, we couldn't use microphones to hear how it sounds in a hall. Even though that's a minor issue, it is after all still a problem.. *pressure.. presure..*
A few people still come late for practice.. *pressure.. pressure..*
The fatigue that comes from spending more than 9 hours in school a day.. *pressure.. pressure..*
The team morale that is not exactly high right now.. The not-so-convicing expressions on the members' faces when they sing.. The changes still made in the songs.. *Pressure!!*
But cut all that emo-ness.. This is what it means to be a conductor anyways, so what am I complaining for? Besides, it's a good experience and Cg Susie says something like she believes all this is teaching me to patient on how to work and deal with people in the future.
We're having a rest on Sunday, and on Monday it's going to be all-out.. Actually we don't sound as bad as many of the members think right now.. It's just that I have big expectations for the choir and I keep pushing them..
(By the way, the look on my face on Saturday had nothing to do with my contempt with Pn Luk.. I in fact really appreciate her coming over to teach us.. It was actually someone in the choir that I felt put a lot of pressure on me and made me the scapegoat for every mistake the choir made.. but we're ok right now.. a misunderstanding I guess..)
I know we can do our best.. Just need to polish some here and theres, and get the team's spirit up and I think we'll be ok.. I'm also sort of relieved that people have gotten sick for the past few days, because then they will probably recover by tomorrow and that's a good thing..
To all the members, I BELIEVE in you all and know we can do our best.. Some of you might not think so, but I also agree that the choir is not about winning competitions, it's about having fun singing. So the main thing about choir is producing a good voice quality that we can be proud of achieving, not necessarily being better than the other choirs. That's why I hope that after the competition is over, we can just have fun singing some other songs as well...
To the sick, you're probably getting better and better. And to the others, section leaders please remind them to have a good rest and do some exercies like jogging to sweat because it'll be good for them. Get yourselves excited for the Monday rehearsal and be confident.. We should be ok if you all follow what you have been told..

I just wanna remind everyone to not start getting nervous because there is absolutely no point to start feeling nervous. If anything, you should begin to feel EXCITED, NOT nervous.
I've witnessed and unfortunately experienced how it is when one of my mate was thinking too much, lost his nerves and messed up big time. He forgot the one essential thing of being in this choir I guess, that is to have FUN singing.
Let me reiterate once again the purpose of this school choir. As you can see from the history bar on the right side of this blog, SMK Batu Lintang choir was not created for the sole purpose of participating in inter-school competitions and winning them, it is also to make beautiful music through singing.
Do not be so...so...FOCUS-DRIVEN on the aim of being champs of Kuching until you forget to just relax and enjoy what you're singing. I know there may seem like there is a huge amount of pressure on us to accomplish that aim, but the truth of the matter is that pressure is all in your head. People do not have expectations for us to win. They only have expectations for us to give the best that we can give. So don't fret too much people!!!
I believe all of the seniors that are still in the choir would reaffirm me when I say that we sound pretty darn good at this moment. Even the old choir members (Nicholas Kho, Eng Jia Yih and the-other-guy-whose-name-i-do-not-know-very-very-sorry) that came in to listen to us on Friday mentioned we sounded good. So don't lose your confidence guys!
Also, about falling sick....haha. There is nothing in the world that we can do about it now right? I notice that most of those who are sick are the seniors. Speaking from my own experience, because I am one of the *counts with fingers* eight who fell sick in the space of 4 DAYS this week, we've been pushing ourselves a bit too muchh to get the best out of us and out of our respective sections. Honestly, it is a lot of stress if a member of the section repeats the same mistakes over and over again. Ask Nurul!!!!
That is why tomorrow's break from practice is very God-sent. God Bless you Madam Anita. I think we all desperately need the break after working our asses of for the past week, especially our conductor.
I hope that everybody will come back in on Monday morning with the same enthusiasm and drive as ever before, if not MORE. Remember, we are singing not because we want to win competitions, but because we love to sing (just reiterating Mr Lee's point)

Choir practice..
Hi again ya all!
Well, competition is coming up soon and we're all practising hard. The attendance has obviously improved, because it is school season and members are bound to turn up during school season.. The mood and the aura, I'd say, is improving. We did a mock presentation in front of a few classes who did not have a teacher in the afternoon, and when we got back to the bilik kuliah it was all business.. It's gonna be quite serious from now on.. We will do our very best to get the songs as perfect as we can, to do the best of our abilities.
Practices are getting really fun, especially with people like Izzati around.. Haha.. There's always some spontanous things happening during practices, so I'd say they are really entertaining and fun.. But like I said, it's getting all serious now.. It's gonna be no more jokes and all for a while.. Gotta get all the songs right..
Uh, when Ruby said that we WILL win.. Let me just say that was just a self-motivation thing.. It's not meant to offend any of our competitors, so please don't take that in an offensive or a serious way.. I personally hope that after the whole competition is over, we can really just be friends and learn from each other..
To the current members: Like I said, it'll be all business from now on.. Few days left and we have to get our act together.. Just a word of reminder:
1. Do not sleep late. Do not sleep later than 11pm at night.
2. Stay away from food that might spoil your vocal chords or be harzardous to your health.
3. Drink more cooling drinks like honey.
4. Do not overstress yourself. Practices may be long, but have enough rest at home.
These tips should be followed because they are really important and when not followed can easily affect our performance on the actual day. The last tip should also be taken seriously.. I know the practices are long but it has to be that long if we want to get our songs right.. So after the practices, get enough rest.. You want to be at your best during the competition..
Members, have faith in yourselves.. You guys have all worked so hard and we'll just do our best during the competition and see it how it goes..

These tips should be followed because they are really important and when not followed can easily affect our performance on the actual day. The last tip should also be taken seriously.. I know the practices are long but it has to be that long if we want to get our songs right.. So after the practices, get enough rest.. You want to be at your best during the competition..
Members, have faith in yourselves.. You guys have all worked so hard and we'll just do our best during the competition and see it how it goes..

4 more days to the "BIG DAY"..
i dont know about you guys, but i'm nervous. maybe it's cos i'm new in this whole experience thingy.. but yes.. we ARE going to win. all we need is ONE FINAL PUSH and voila! we'll impress everyone there AND we'll impress Ryner. i always find impressing Ryner, especially us sopranoes, a great challenge. i just love it when Ryner is happy with our singing. cause i know he believes in each and everyone of us, and that is why he is working like two times harder than us all.. he deserves a pat on the back, no?
but anyways.. thank you Ryner, for all your hard work with us.. and especially for believing in us all..
